Now is the time to thrive
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD and related difficulties can impact individuals and families in multiple layers, breaking down our foundation and causing us to feel out of control. OCD causes us to feel like our body and brain is out of control and working against us constantly, and this draining, constant experience can truly feel neverending–we get this, and we know healing is a real option. You can have hope.
Trauma-Informed OCD Treatment
At TheraThrive we not only know how to support you in overcoming and developing through intrusive thoughts, heavy feelings, and compulsive behaviors, but also how to support your external environment of parents, families, and systems as a whole with healing from the impacts of OCD.
Our approach to OCD care includes a trauma-focus and reparative lens, which allows us to treat clients from a space of warmth, empathy, and understanding. We are working with you, not defensively against your experiences and behaviors.
A trauma-focused and reparative lens for OCD care at TheraThrive includes:
- Awareness of the impact on OCD and trauma it can inflict.
- Knowledge that OCD can stem from trauma, while also causing more trauma symptoms as well.
- Acceptance of you. We accept the beliefs you hold. If you bring up topics that may need challenging for your OCD treatment, we accept and work to understand where these come from, prior to challenging them or working to change them, so we can truly understand and join you first.
- Never pushing you without ensuring you are both ready and willing. Although OCD treatment may include challenge, we will never push too far. Unfortunately pushing too far can be common with OCD treatment (elsewhere), and we believe this pushing could potentially increase symptoms or even cause harm. Instead, we work with you (and also support your family, or parents, if our client is a child), to find appropriate first steps in order to be most successful and create real and lasting positive change.
- Trauma-informed, slow and gentle exposure therapy. This maybe sometimes be in vitro, and always with your consent first and foremost.
- Challenging intrusive thoughts that harm your self concept and psyche; you are strong, resilient, and capable.
- Building up self esteem and self-understanding, and also building on strengths during every single session.
- Honoring your experiences. Your experiences are important and valid.
- Being aware of masking as a coping skill and a survival technique, and supporting you in unmasking as you wish to and are able.
- Embracing authenticity, while continuing to monitor, and we work to decrease the impacts of obsessions and compulsions.
- Getting curious with obsessions and fear-based thoughts. Finding control and security as a means to reduce these thoughts.
- Personalized care: we know you and your experiences are unique and we work to see you holistically as a means to customize our care plans. There is no straightforward template care or treatment box you must fit into.
We believe you can regain control and power in yourself. We’ve seen it and we know how to help you achieve this.
