Intensive Outpatient Program for Neurodivergent Teens

More support and structure than weekly therapy, yet teens can remain at home and out of the hospital, connected to their everyday lives.

It can be incredibly difficult to watch your teen struggle and wonder what level of support they need. When weekly therapy isn't enough, our Bay Area IOP for neurodivergent teens provides comprehensive care and support. Our approach at TheraThrive is compassionate, individualized, and thoughtfully designed around the needs of neurodivergent teens and their families.

Comprehensive IOP For Neurodivergent Teens

A Program Designed for Neurodivergent Teens

We created TheraThrive IOP because a lot of adolescents are not accepted into programs when they have a neurodivergent primary diagnosis. Also, we have seen too many teens attend IOPs that do not really understand high sensitivity or know how to both support psychological needs and also neurodivergent minds at the same time.

We Go Beyond Talk Therapy

TheraThrive IOP goes beyond traditional talk therapy. Teens actively practice emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, self-advocacy, and social skills through experiential activities, collaborative projects, game play, role-playing, creative expression, and community outings.

Integrated Neurofeedback

TheraThrive IOP incorporates neurofeedback as an important component of treatment. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive form of brain training that helps adolescents become more aware of and improve patterns of brain activity associated with attention, emotional regulation, stress response, cognitive flexibility, and self-regulation.

Participants receive:

  • One in-office neurofeedback session each week
  • Home neurofeedback training 2–3 times per week
  • Ongoing monitoring and individualized adjustments
  • Support from clinicians trained in neurofeedback integration

Many families report improvements in focus, emotional regulation, stress tolerance, sleep quality, self-awareness, and overall functioning when neurofeedback is combined with therapeutic intervention.

We Get Neurodivergent Teens

Many of the teens we work with are bright, creative, and insightful, yet they may also struggle with anxiety, OCD, existential worries, depression, PDA, emotional overwhelm, burnout, executive functioning challenges, social difficulties, school stress, family conflict, or a sense that they don't fit in or meet the expectations placed upon them.

Rather than focusing on trying to change who a teen is, we focus on helping them understand themselves more deeply, develop practical skills, strengthen relationships, and navigate life with greater confidence and self-awareness. Also, learning happens not only in the therapy room, but also through real-world experiences that help adolescents build confidence and generalize skills across settings.

Therathrive IOP combines evidence-informed therapies, social-emotional learning, neurofeedback, expressive therapies, real-world skill building, and family support into one comprehensive program designed specifically for neurodivergent adolescents.

Our approach begins with the understanding that autism, ADHD, and other forms of neurodivergence are natural variations of the human experience.

We do not teach masking or encourage adolescents to suppress their authentic selves. Instead, we help teens better understand how their brains work, recognize their strengths, advocate for their needs, develop effective coping strategies, and build meaningful connections with others.

Many adolescents know what they should do yet struggle to apply those skills in everyday situations. That's where we can help, with experiential  learning and real-world practice within our groups.

A Family Approach

Meaningful and lasting change happens most effectively when families are supported alongside their adolescents.

Parents and caregivers participate in weekly family sessions and also weekly parent support classes, where they gain practical tools, education, and guidance from our clinicians with expertise in autism, ADHD, neurodevelopment, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and family systems.

Begin the Journey

Every neurodivergent adolescent deserves support that recognizes both their challenges and their strengths.

If your teen needs more outpatient support than weekly therapy can provide, TheraThrive IOP may provide the structure, support, and specialized care they need to move forward with greater confidence and resilience.
